Trappers have lots of different sets to catch coyotes. The flat set, however, is the favorite among a lot of trappers.
The flat set is just what the name says: a set blended in to match its surroundings.
There is no hole, like there would be for a dirt hole set. No flashy stuff to get the coyote’s attention.
Notice the dirt was sifted over the top to match the rest of the area. You want to leave this set looking as natural as possible.
The rock was used as a visual attraction to the coyotes, and to also help guide the coyote so he would come in and step on the trap. You do not want these backings to be too big. This rock was the perfect size.
Notice the gloves. It’s important to keep human odors to a minimum when canine trapping.
This set worked perfect. It didn’t take long for the flat set to connect with a coyote.
