Wingshooting season is just around the corner and big game hunters should keep this  bonus option in mind as they plan their fall adventures.  I just returned from a big game safari in Africa with a friend who loved bird hunting.  As a cherry on top of the great adventure, we booked an overnight hunt with Buleau Wingshooting in which we received an afternoon hunt for francolin and helmet crested guinea fowl as well as a night lodging in a comfortable lodge complete with a pet warthog that loved to have its belly rubbed.

Lots of Options for Deer Hunters

Swainson francolin are about the size of a ruffed grouse.

Whether you hunt with a bow or rifle, keep the “bird bonus option” in mind to make the big game hunt a combination affair.  Should you fill your tag early, you will have a backup plan that will be lots of fun and may be inexpensive or free.  Ringneck pheasants in the Midwest and Great Plains, waterfowl down South, doves about everywhere are just a few of the options that can make the combo extra special.

Culinary Delight

The limit on Francolin in South Africa is eight per day and we had great excitement filling our limit.  Over the coals from a roaring evening campfire, we feasted on eland steaks and toasted the many exploits of the day.  Francolin hold very tight to a pointing dog and the Buleau operation had a German shorthair pointer and Versla mix that gave us plenty of action. As the hunt concluded, “Stitch” went on point and I lay down my shotgun and grabbed a cell phone.  Check out the results in the YouTube clip:
