One of the great hunts of North America launches from a large boat in the myriad of bays and lagoons of Alaska.

To hunt mountain goat, black bear, Sitka blacktail deer, and brown bear, a sportsman typically has to travel deep into the wilderness, sleep in tents and endure the unpredictability of Alaskan weather.

For many, these hardships add character to a hunt, yet to others they are deterrents that eliminate the excitement and true adventure of the wilderness due to physical inability.

The exception is the Alaskan big game hunt that uses a large boat (some would say a ship) as a base camp and then heads ashore each day by dingy or Zodiak when game is spotted or promising terrain nears.

These trips are ideal for the hunting couple where only one partner hunts, families looking to enjoy an Alaskan adventure, and those that are less physically able to endure the Alaskan bush for long periods of time.

Big game may be your first priority, yet fishing is a fun and tasty pastime.

The amenities of a boat-hunt are nearly worth the trip alone: You’ll sleep in a warm, dry, bug-free bed each night, dine on salmon, fresh crab, shrimp and other delicacies, and you can cover lots of ground by glassing from offshore.

Once you spot a trophy, you can zip to shore in a small boat and begin the stalk.

Their website provides more images of what can be expected, although numerous outfitters offer these kinds of hunts.

If you enjoy adventurous hunts, but want to include your spouse or family, put a boat hunt at the top of your bucket list.
