A hunting trip is one of the best motivations to get in shape.  If you know that you will be climbing mountains, trees, and spending 16 hours a day in pursuit of game, it’s much easier to train through strenuous preparations and defy the pain.  Personally, I know that I will be heaving for breath as I hunt for elk and climb the steep mountains of idaho this September.

Pushing the Envelope

I learned the importance of preparation in New Mexico many years ago.  I’d drawn a primo tag in a unit with huge bulls, but only had four days to hunt.  Opening morning, my guide took me on a marathon hike with no food or water.  My feet ached and I hit the hay totally exhausted that evening.  Late the next day, we spotted “the biggest bull he’d ever seen” high on a distant mountain, but I declined to go after it.  I was out of shape, feet blistered, and totally exhausted.  I’d finish the hunt without launching an arrow, yet have never forgotten the humiliation and disappointment.

Train to Hunt Challenge- How it Began

Seven years ago the Train To Hunt was launched designed to help hunters prepare for the physical demands of whatever hunt they had coming up in the fall. Recognizing that hunters have such a short season and therefore no great motivation to train year round I decided that it was time to create an event specifically for hunters! The Train To Hunt Challenge was born in 2011 and designed to give hunters, not only a reason to train in the early parts of the year, but to give them a testing ground for their training program. It is unlike any event you have ever done, and will help you prepare for the ultimate goal, hunting season.
